Intro

Welcome!
     My name is Augustina and I am a recent graduate with a Master in Biomedical Informatics. My interest of bioinformatics peaked about 5 years ago; I had realized just how powerful this field is. Bioinformatics holds so much potential in solving many of the biological questions that have gone unanswered for years. This field could revolutionize the way we go about healthcare and improve treatment options in medicine. This is the journey I want to be a part of!

     I have a background in biotechnology, microbiology, genetics, and cell & molecular biology. The knowledge I have gained from all these domains have surely increased my excitement and fueled my interest in employing the knowledge that computational biology holds. That interest led me to the research I conducted with my supervisor, Dr. Q. Duan, in the Computational Genomics Lab at Queen’s University. By the way, check out my awesome projects !

Projects

     The Canadian Healthy Infant Longitudinal Development cohort study aims to understand how the environment and host genetics influence the development of respiratory (e.g., asthma) and atopic diseases (e.g., eczema) in children across Canada. They collected data from +3500 infant-mother dyads from 4 major cities across the country.

1. Investigating the effects of maternal health status on the human milk microbiomes of mothers in the CHILD Cohort Study.
     The aim of my project was to understand how the health status of mothers affects the human milk microbiome. I used R and Linux programming to employ data analysis and genomic analysis techniques on large, complex health and microbiological datasets. I performed general linearized models (GLMs) to detect associations that could exist within the data.

2. Investigating the effects of the environment on the human milk microbiome of mothers in the CHILD cohort study.
     I assisted in performing some analyses for the main author of this project. To identify association that possibly exist between the features of the study, I performed general linearized models (GLMs), genome-wide association studies (GWAS), and genome-environment interaction analysis (GxE).
